Big-box T&M struts at ESC Boston 2011

As expected, the just-concluded Embedded Systems Conference in Boston has lots of software tools, debuggers, compilers, and code optimizers. But there's more to ESC than just software.

Walking the conference floor, I saw lots of hardware—and I mean real hardware: power supplies, heat sinks, heat pipes, fans, chassis assemblies, and more. I also saw that the major test and measurement vendors had substantial presence?: Agilent, Tektronix, Rhode & Schwarz, and LeCroy.

Why ESC? I asked the various booth representatives and the answers were pretty much along these lines: with the enormous growth in applications for embedded systems, and the increases in performance (speed, resolution, data rates, bandwidth, accuracy) of such systems, embedded designers need high-end equipment. In other words, T&M vendors are going where the action is.

These vendors did not have small, "token" booths on the floor: they were large, well-staffed, and had lots of test gear so attendees could get some serious hands-on, try-it time. The photos don’t fully capture the situation: you'll have to extrapolate on your own.

You can always spot a SW engineer in my company - they're the ones with piles of test gear on their desks or are to be found in the lab. Us HW engineers hardly ever have test gear on our desks and many never darken the doors of the lab. Why? We design ICs.
