The folks from Xilinx have just announced the immediate availability of the Winter 2012 edition of heir quarterly Xcell Journal magazine (Click Here to see the magazine)

Xcell Journal issue 78’s cover story details Xilinx releasing the first three targeted design platforms for its 28nm, 7 series devices. The Virtex-7 FPGA VC707 Evaluation Kit, Kintex-7 FPGA KC705 Evaluation Kit and the Kintex-7 FPGA DSP Kit are Xilinx’s second-generation targeted design platforms that offer far more than typical FPGA kits. In addition to development boards, these targeted design platforms include tools, reference designs, IP cores and documentation and access to a rich set of Xilinx Ecosystem IP cores and FMC cards. The Virtex-7 FPGA VC707 Evaluation Kit and Kintex-7 FPGA KC705 Evaluation Kit also include Agile Mixed Signal (AMS) FMC daughter cards to help customers take advantage of the built in analog functionality of the chips.

Xcell Journal issue 78 is packed with fascinating feature articles, such as “Tips and Tricks for Better Floating-Point Calculations in Embedded,” “How to Build a Self-Checking Testbench,” and “Ins and Outs of Digital Filter Design and Implementation.” The issue also includes a methodology feature on the use of FPGAs in the emerging embedded vision market and a methodology feature from two PhD students at the University Rovira i Virgili in Tarragona, Spain proposing the use of an FPGA-based electronic control unit (ECU) design to address the automotive industry’s AUTOSAR and ISO 26262 Standards.

"This issue of Xcell Journal has a broad swath of practical how-to and compelling methodology articles that show off the flexibility of FPGAs and the ingenuity of Xilinx users,” said Xcell Journal Publisher, Mike Santarini.  “I’m eager to see what great inventions users will come up with using our new 7 Series Targeted Design Platforms, which will undoubtedly help them get their designs to market even faster.”

Once again, Xcell Journal invites readers to write a humorous caption for an interesting cartoon for a chance to win an Avnet Spartan-6 LX9 MicroBoard. After deliberations, Xcell’s staff will award the kit to the author of the best caption and two runners-up. (Click Here to see the contest rules)
