Silicon Valley Nation: Which IC companies won't survive?
Brian Fuller

Douglas McIntyre, writing on 24/7 Wall St., has a provocative list of big companies that he believes won't make it.
Groupon and Zynga are a bit of a surprise; AMD and Dell are not. Both have been challenged at staying on top of larger technology trends. AMD was hamstrung by its ATI graphics acquisition, and Dell hasn't embraced mobile, McIntyre argues.
In the IC world, Renesas is undergoing a big reorg. STMicroelectronics is hurting. NXP is still trying to find its way. The AMD acquisition rumor mill churns 24/7. Clearly, other shoes will be dropping in the next 24 months.
But which ones?
You tell us. Below is a list of the top 20 IC companies. Go through it and give us your Caesarian thumbs up or thumbs down:

Will these companies be in business in five years as they are now, or will be they acquired or otherwise have vanished from the map?

Looks like the prognosis for Japanese companies is not that good if this survey is considered to be scientific enough!

5 years is a reasonable amount of time.If some other new technology comes in by 2014 and by 2017 all the above needs to either shift to it or vanish.

Five years is a short time horizon. I wonder how different the responses would be if the time frame were changed to 10 years?

I think there is no way that a big, established semiconducter company, which leads the field in audio and power technologies, will go down. So I think I can safely say that National Semiconductor will be around for at least another decade. Oops, did I miss something? Read Ecclesiastes 9:11 - "The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the sttrong...but time and circumstance happen to them all" - or words to that effect.
