What were they thinking: a use for body piercing

I know it must be a generation gap thing, but I just cannot see the fascination that many younger people have these days with piercings. OK, I get the ears, maybe even a couple of holes there and there are a few others that I am OK with, but many of them just make me shudder and ask what were they thinking? But this morning I had an epiphany while searching the patent catalogue for an amazing thing to bring to your attention – these body piercings may actually be useful as demonstrated by John Rose who had patent 6557994 “Frameless glasses attaching to body piercing studs” issued on May 6th 2003.
A frameless glassware assembly attaching to body piercing studs. Design consisting of an elastomeric C-clip fixedly attached to one distal end of a metal arm, which is attached to a frameless glass lens assembly. Design allows for frameless eyeglass attachment to the eyebrow studs or to the nose studs of a user via the elastomeric C-clip. One embodiment allows the frameless glassware to attach to eyebrow studs and the second allows the frameless glassware to attach to a nose stud. Both designs are frameless and avoid side wire earpieces common to hold glassware to the face of a user.

One interesting aspect to this patent is that it claim it to be an improvement, not an invention. In claim 1 we see:
In combination with a body piuercing eyebrow stud, a left stud fastened outbound on a left eyebrow, and a right stuf fastened outbound on a right eyebrow, and improvement comprising:
- A left eyeglass member having a C shaped clamp fastened to an outbound section of the eyeglass member;
- A right eyeglass member having a C shaped clamp fastened to an outbound section of the eyeglass member;
- A connecting bridge joinuing the left to the right eyeglass member; and;
- Wherein each C shaped clamp snaps onto the respective left or right stud.

As someone who hates needles in general, the whole piercing fad leaves me bewildered. Since my neck fusion, I find it very inconvient to take antibiotics just to have my teeth cleaned because your body attacks embedded metal when your teeth bacteria gets into your blood stream.
Plus, all kinds of electrical and magnetic fields could light you up if you get too close to the EM fields. So pierce at your own risk. I cannot see any upside to inflicting pain on your body just to make it even more hazardous to work with electronics.
Just my opinion.

I am with you - I hate needles and avoid them whenever I can. The places some people pierce just boggles my mind.

They'd probably do well in Australia - every 2nd person seems to have some weird piercings. And tattoos......

Now what exactly are you trying to tell us David? If every second person has piercing or tattoos, then I know it does not imply a completely overlapping set, but the odds of you having one or the other is fairly high...

Hmmmm.. you want specifics....difficult...
My set of strange piercings would include any male with any piercing, and females with non-ear piercings (sexist, aren't I??) I'd say about one in 10 Aussies would be in there. Tattoos are more prevalent...probably about 1 in 3 or 4 overall. And someone with a strange piercing almost certainly has a tattoo (like 80-90%).
So I was exaggerating a bit above (I'll send you a copy of my poetic license if you wish ;-) But certainly I've seen a lot more of both here than elsewhere in the world, especially among the young.

Where I live in the US, I would say that twenty percent of people between fifteen and forty have visible tattoos, and thiry percent have visible piercings other than the ears. The guys that stretch out their ear lobes with 'plugs' (look like big grommets) are the ones I wonder about the most. On eguy in town has his ear lobes stretched to about three centimeters, when you look through the hollow plug, it frames a biblical verse tattooed on his neck.
