Caption contest: Mars attacks!

Sylvie Barak

9/5/2012 3:39 PM EDT

It’s no small feat that our cartoon guru Daniel Guidera manages to come up with exceptional engineering themed artwork every month, but September’s drawing is out of this world. Literally.

What with the Mars rover Curiosity landing on the red planet, and the sad passing of Neil Armstrong, space has been dominating the news lately, and this picture is fitting tribute.

Even more fitting, dear readers, would be to find the absolute best caption to accompany this image. Something really out there. Pie in the sky. Far out. You see where I’m going with this.

I’m not going to be waiting light years for your contributions either, so crank that wit into warp speed and launch over your best suggestions before the end of the month.

The winner will receive a full size color print of the cartoon, caption included. And with that said, let’s countdown…. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1…. Liftoff!

Gary believed in two things, having all the latest gadgets and solar power. Luckily the L1 Lagrangian point provided sufficient constant solar flux to power his whole collection. The downside was that using mice in zero gravity turned out to be more difficult than he'd assumed.

Neil's management completely misunderstood his safety recommendations for encapsulating the DUT, having lots of space to work in, floating all of the lab equipment, and not tying anything to ground.
