It's about ecosystem
Sander Arts came over from the Netherlands three years ago and worked as a marketing executive for NXP in the Valley. The Dutchman recently shifted over to a similar role at Atmel. Where NXP, even in the Valley, had a decidedly Dutch flavor and influence, Atmel is somewhat more diverse.
For Arts, the decision to move was a a big one, involving not only his wife but his son.
"I took him to Vegas, then San Jose. I gave him a vote," he said.
"My wife understood my drive, and it was going to be another great chapter in our lives. She's extremely happy for all the similar reasons you've heard so far," Arts said.
The cost of living does not seem to deter the immigrants. "If you look at cost of living, places like Singapore and Shanghai are expensive--like Europe. Maybe not as expensive as here, but there are costly areas to be in."
The couple just bought a new home in the Valley, amid the move from NXP to Atmel.
"Everything is right here, including academics. The ecosystems is is pretty amazing."
Three recent immigrants. Different perspectives. They still keep coming. The Valley's not dead yet.
