Rambus buys memory startup

IP maven Rambus Inc. established a position in the memory market with the acquisition of Unity Semiconductor Corp. The deal wasn’t just aimed at beefing up the Rambus patent portfolio, though. Unity has been working on a metal-oxide-based non-volatile memory cell under the name CMOx, and the merger could provide the resources they need to move forward. Speaking of resistive RAM (RRAM), at the 2012 International Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM), Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. reported fabricating a contact RRAM cell using a pure high-K metal gate 28-nm CMOS logic process.
