Patents in EDA

A press release from Tela Innovations brought my attention to an IEEE Spectrum article that talks about the patent power companies in various technology areas have. The ordering is based on their evaluation of the quality and potential impact of a company’s patents. Tela ranked 11 in the Semiconductor manufacturing table. What was more interesting to me (and I think you) were the rankings in the computer software category. I didn’t expect to see any EDA companies in there and yet to my surprise there were three, but not the one that would have first come to mind due to the number of patent litigations in the area of emulation.
Topping the EDA list at number 11 is Synopsys. The article cites 140 patents in 2011 with a positive growth index and increasing pipeline impact. They give them a “power” rating of 382.2. Just for comparison sake, Microsoft is number one with 2333 patents and a power rating of 2086.7. And just in case you think this will always favor large companies, Citrix is number 2 with 72 patents but a power rating just behind Microsoft at 2022.4. This is because the ratings are based on a set of objective, quantitative benchmarking of the patent portfolios that they have developed. No further information is available on those criteria.
Coming in at 14 is Mathworks with 99 patents and a power rating of 288.4. Finally we find Cadence right behind them in 12th place with 137 patents and a rating of 273.4Brian Bailey – keeping you covered
