Flash storage cards, which in 2012 consumed the most flash memory, are expected to tumble to third place in 2013, according to IHS. Flash storage cards are expected to account for 19.7 percent of flash memory bits this year, according to the firm.

Solid state drives, meanwhile, are expected to jump from fourth to second in flash consumption this year, accounting for some 20.6 percent of flash memory bits, according to the IHS forecast.

Rounding out the top six consumer of flash memory, USB flash drives are expected to be No. 4, with tablet PCs in fifth place and MP3 players ranked No. 6, according to IHS.

The top six device types are expected to account for 93.2 percent of all flash memory usage in 2013, IHS said. Most of the remaining 6.8 percent is expected to be split among 10 products, including personal navigation devices, video camcorders, handheld video game players and digital set-top boxes, according to IHS.

IHS projects that NAND revenue will increase about 10 percent to reach a record $22 billion this year. NAND revenue slipped to about $20 billion in 2012 after peaking at $21 billion in 2011, according to the firm.

The market research firm attributes the projected increase in NAND flash revenue to NAND’s position in storage, consumer electronics and the increasing reliance on "the cloud." Among the trends that support increasing NAND use are new requirements for ultrabook touch screens by Intel Corp., which the firm said would likely increase cache SSD usage relative to standalone SSDs because of component costs. The move toward the smart home is also likely to boost NAND consumption, with several firms rolling out NAND solutions for the smart home at last month’s Consumer Electronics Show.
