Which are the best wireless iPad speakers?

I read the Steve Jobs Biography by Walter Isaacson as soon as it came out (I really need to write reviews on this book, along with reviews on the biographies and memoirs of Steve "Woz" Wozniak, Bill Gates, and Paul Allen … it’s just finding the time that’s the problem).

During his discussions about the creation and deployment of the iPad, Isaacson notes that it became common for people to question each other along the lines of “What’s on your play list?” Another aspect to this phenomenon was that people would talk about what songs were on famous peoples’ iPods.

Strange to relate, I really never got into downloading music to my iPod or – more recently – my iPad. Well, this was true until this past weekend… I was sitting on our back deck enjoying the sunshine when – for reasons unknown – I started to reminisce about a Supertramp concert I’d attended in the late 1970s.

It wasn’t long before I was overtaken by the urge to listen to the little rascals, but the last media I had them on was LPs, which have long ago been swallowed by the mists of time. Isn’t it great to be around today, with the Internet and iPads and iTunes and “stuff”?

I immediately bounced over to the iTunes store and downloaded Crime of the Century, Crisis? What Crisis?, Even in the Quietest Moments, and Breakfast in America … after which I spent a happy afternoon listening on my headphones and humming along out of tune, causing our two dogs and two cats to look at me in consternation and to raise their eyebrows at each other to indicate what they thought about my musical abilities.

Now, listening on the headphones is great if you are by yourself, but what if you want to “share the joy” with your family and friends (the ones who haven’t got the sense to find something urgent to do before you have them trapped and cornered). So I started pondering the idea of wireless loudspeakers. Then I did a search on Amazon.com, where I ran across the Logitech Wireless Boombox for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.

Hmmm… I just don’t know… On the one hand this is nice and compact … but on the other hand, would I be better off with two separate speakers to enhance the stereo? Perhaps I should go for a three-speaker setup to boost the base? Or would all of this be overkill, and should follow the KISS principle (Keep It Simple, Stupid).

Life would be a lot easier if I had a clue what I was doing (this is becoming my mantra these days). What do you use and/or suggest? Any recommendations would be very gratefully accepted…

I should point out that I really don't have an incredibly good "ear" ... so I'm looking for something affordable that gives a "good sound" -- I don;t need "the best of the best of the best"...

Do you want to listen to them on deck or in quiet room. It lot depends on environment. However, check them on Apple store too.

I'm thinking both -- on deck (especially if friends are round) or in the front room sometimes if it's just me listening

Those are nice speakers. I like the logitech but they seem a bit ugly. Hopefully they have a dock for my iPad http://detectapple.com/1-million-ipads-estimated-to-be-sold-friday/

Harsh words :-) I'm sure you are correct for a music afficionado ... but when it comes to my untrained ear the sound from the iPad is good enough for me

The Bose has a good reputation. I quite like the thought of the Bluetooth one.

I do like the sound of the Bose systems I've heard ... but they are way too expensive for my pocket...

I have the Sony SRS-BTM30 speakers which I'm happy with but they are NLA from Sony and are getting harder to find. Sony has replaced them with something twice as expensive (~$200) that don't sound much better to me.

I looked at the reviews -- and one guy said that he had to keep on matching up the Bluetooth, which would be a pain...

I'm just hoping your quest won't be summed up by track 5 of Crime of the Century... ;-)

"Nothing but a Dreamer" ... good one.

More like track 7 of the "Supertramp" album

I saw them play "Crime of the Century" live in London -- incredible...

When I say the "Supertramp" album, I mean the 1970 album by Supertramp (the group) where the album itself was called "Supertramp"

Wifi would probably be a better connection technology. Playback using AirPlay. I don't have a set, so no recommendation. The alternative (though not portable) is AppleTV, it's very slick.

I've got an Apple TV and -- as you say -- it is very slick (check pout my blog about streaming videos through a "Henry" http://bit.ly/xFUK0U )

It's great for watching videos and boring a bunch of people with your holiday photos (grin), but not so good when you want to play music on the back deck...

Although it requires a power cord, a Sonos Play3 or Play5 would produce better sound than some cheap dock. At $300 and $400 each it is not necessarily that cheap but the lossless audio over Wi-fi helps and it is easy to carry from place to place. It does use it's own dedicated network so the $50 WAP from them is needed or you can plug in the speaker to a wired network connection. Any audio on the network is accesible with an app for remote control via phone or tablet.

No audio dropouts provided a decent enough RF coverage is available.

You can add devices to your hearts content. And no I don't work for them but know someone who has tested their stuff.

A nice set of wireless mobile speakers are the Bose SoundLink Wireless Mobile Speaker .

The aren't cheap but worth every cent.

Whatever you get has to have great dynamic range. Just think of the Logical Song with that awesome base intro ba-da-da dumpa-dum-dum...and then the "who I ammm" outro that hits the stratosphere. Great song. And the speakers have to be good enough to make the itune sound like, er vinyl or at least as close as possible! :)
