Seeing this, in part, inspired me to re-watch the three LOTR movies.

Hobbit safety video from Air New Zealand

Let’s be honest, no one really pays much attention to airline safety videos anymore. Especially if you’re a semi-frequent flier, who knows their life-vest inflation tube from their whistle. It’s all rather uninspiring stuff, to be honest.

But as you embark on your long and exciting journey to New Zealand (yes, yes, we can all dream!) you’ll be happy to know that a great adventure awaits you on board, in the form of a particularly well made Hobbit themed safety video, just in time for the big film’s release.

With much of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey having been filmed in New Zealand, the south Pacific island does indeed have some claim to the title of Middle Earth, and even acclaimed director and Native born kiwi Peter Jackson tips up to make a cameo performance.

The short safety film, made by Weta Workshop, who also worked on the actual Hobbit movie, is chock full of Tolkein lore and titillating details, sure to delight fans (at least for the first two or three times they see the clip!).

Hairy feet, wizards, precious rings, lights to light your path down the dark airplane aisles… the clip has it all.

Whether or not the film will help make any safety precautions stick with travelers is unclear, but as Gandalf would say, “There are no safe paths in this part of the world,” so best to pay close attention!

I like it.
It does keep you watching just to see what character shows up next.

Well done New Zealand.

GREAT video, however I can't help wondering about the reactions of anyone who has not read / seen LOTR (there must be a couple around...) Would love to be sitting near one when it comes on.....

Then again, if it leads said persons to read the book or see the movie.....job done!

I have a lot of respect for companies that can be creative like this. Why not? It'll certainly make people more likely to watch the video. All of the necessary information is there. The only downside is that it seems a lot longer than a standard safety video. On the other hand, I wouldn't complain.
