What do you do if you have an FPGA question?

Clive Maxfield

Why, you "Ask Max" of course…

I tell you, I have been having a ball over at All Programmable Planet. I love explaining things (the trick is to get me to stop talking), and I've found a new venue in a series of Ask Max columns. The idea is that readers ask me questions and I respond with a short column boasting graphics that will make you squirm with excitement (well, I really am rather proud of the image I created for the first one).

All Programmable Planet has only been live for a week, but we already have the following Ask Max columns for your delectation and delight:

If you get a moment, bounce on over and take a look, and maybe pose your own question(s) for investigation in a future Ask Max.

Actually, I have a question for you. It's now almost 30 years since the first FPGA hit the scene. At that time, the "Gate Array" portion of the "Field-Programmable Gate Array" moniker did make sense. Sad to relate, however, the name FPGA has outlived its usefulness, because modern programmable devices can do so much more than their ancestors. Is it time for a new appellation? Check out my Mind the FPGA Gap column and then take the associated Flash Poll (linked to from the column) so that I can see what everyone things:

Meanwhile, microcontroller expert Duane Benson is happily beavering away learning all about FPGAs in his Discovering FPGAs series of articles:

Also, Chris Taylor is documenting his progress with the Papilio FPGA Development Board:

And Paul Clark has just started an interesting series of articles on the PicoBlaze 8-bit soft core processor:

In reality, I've only teasingly touched on the cornucopia of tasty topics, bodacious blogs, and capriciously cunning comments that are reverberating around the hallowed halls of All Programmable Planet. So why not bounce over to visit us and join the discussions…

If you found this article to be of interest, visit Programmable Logic Designline where – in addition to my Max's Cool Beans blogs – you will find the latest and greatest design, technology, product, and news articles with regard to programmable logic devices of every flavor and size (FPGAs, CPLDs, CSSPs, PSoCs...).

Also, you can obtain a highlights update delivered directly to your inbox by signing up for my weekly newsletter – just Click Here to request this newsletter using the Manage Newsletters tab (if you aren't already a member you'll be asked to register, but it's free and painless so don't let that stop you [grin]).

Last but certainly not least, make sure you check out the daily discussions and other information resources at All Programmable Planet, where we cover everything of interest in "Programmable Space" for everyone from beginners to experts, hardware designers and software developers, and system designers.

Hello Max, I have been following Duane Benson and his activities on an Avnet Spartan-6 LX9 MicroBoard. I then took the decision to buy one but they don't seem to be available in Europe or the UK. Any ideas please?

That's a bummer -- I will ask the guys at Xilinx about this - -as a worse case I you could order one in the USA and have it shipped to my office and then I will post it on to you ... but let me check with Xilinx first -- Max

I was just chatting to my friend Adam in the UK -- he ordered one of these from the USA and paid $60 for shipping.

I asked why he hadn't had it shipped to me and he said that he simply hadn't thought about this.

So if you want to order one and have it shipped to me, I'll forward it on to you ( email me at max@clivemaxfield.com ) and we'll set something up
