I am delighted to be able to return to EE Times as a regular columnist/blogger after a sixteen year absence. Richard Wallace asked me to write "Nickel Tours of the 'Net" which cataloged the impact of the Internet on Electronic Design as websites first started to become common in 1994. And now Junko Yoshida has asked me to look at innovation and entrepreneurship in the broader electronic systems design ecosystem.

Sean, I want to know your views about getting pre-seed funding to build a prototype that has commercial potential. What are the likely places where an entrepreneur electronics engineer can find this kind of money?

Iqbal, you appear to be based in Texas where the laws about non-compete are much stronger than CA. One question any potential investor is going to have is "is this new product unrelated to any work you have done or lines of business that your current employer is engaged in?"
One good book on the entrepreneurial journey is Barry Moltz's "You have to be a Little Crazy" which I would encourage you to read. Normally seed funding comes from "Friends and Family" so I would put together a 1-2 page business plan that outlines how much money you need to get to your first risk reducing milestone that would justify additional investment.
