Globalstar, Qualcomm ink $140 million deal on satellite phones

MANHASSET, N.Y. — Handheld satellite phone Globalstar LLC has signed a $140 million agreement with Qualcomm Inc. to manufacture next-generation satellite voice and data products.

The agreement gives Globalstar (Milpitas, Calif.) an uninterrupted supply of mobile handsets and fixed satellite phones for the next four years and enables the company to continue offering satellite voice handsets and data hardware to domestic and international distributors, resellers and end-user customers.

Qualcomm (San Diego, Calif.) has had a long business relationship with Globalstar. Qualcomm currently manufactures the GSP 1600 handset, the GSP 2900 fixed unit, as well as the GSP-1620 duplex data modem hardware.
