Intel disputes embedded article

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Intel Corp. is disputing a report originally published on the Web site Embedded.com about its status as a supplier to the embedded processor market.

The May 29 article, "Intel Bows Out," reported that the chip maker had recently released an end-of-life bulletin for a range of embedded processors.

The report also noted that Intel "will only offer Pentiums and Pentium-like CPUs for embedded" applications.

An Intel spokeswoman in a statement sent to EE Times, which republished the article, said: "The article seriously mischaracterizes a product discontinuance as signaling that 'Intel is all-but-abandoning the embedded systems business.' In fact, the products that we are canceling have enjoyed long and healthy product life cycles, some more than 25 years.

"However," the statement added, "at this time the forecasted volumes for these product lines are now too low to continue production of beyond next year.'This decision was based on customer demand for the individual products, not on a change in business strategy."

The spokeswoman added that Intel is "not 'bowing out' of the embedded market at all. Embedded processors and chip sets continue to be an important and sizeable business for Intel, and one that we remain strongly committed to."
