LONDON — John Carey, co-founder of Advanced Micro Devices Inc. in 1969 and lead investor in Integrated Device Technology Inc. in 1980, has joined Elonics Ltd. (Livingston, Scotland) as a non-executive director.

Elonics is a fabless chip company founded in 2003 that specializes in the development and supply of radio frequency ICs such as digitally-controlled tuners for broadcast reception applications.

Carey joins the board as Elonics is reportedly seeking to raise about £4 million (about $6.6 million). The company is chaired by David Milne who took Wolfson Microelectronics public before retiring.

Elonics has been promised three-quarters of the sum so far, but is prepared to extend the funding round, according to a Scotland on Sunday report that references David Srodzinski, CEO and founder of Elonics.

"John Carey has been an investor and mentor to Elonics since early 2008. His appointment as director comes as Elonics matures and develops its customer base," said Srodzinski in a statement.

John Carey was born and educated in Liverpool and emigrated to Canada and then to California to work in the semiconductor business. Having founded AMD and served as CEO and chairman at IDT, he joined the board of Wolfson Microelectronics in 1998 before serving as chairman from 2000 to 2008.
