Intel helps lead Europe's 450-mm wafer initiative

EEMI-450 has also invited Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacuturing Co. Ltd. to join the steering committee. It is not known how TSMC has responded.
However, the membership of EEMI-450 has expanded to 28 members according to presentation materials which could be found at www.eemi450.net, when this story was first posted.
In April 2009 IMEC began a 70 million euro (about $100 million) expansion of its research labs with an additional 2,800 square meter clean room to allow it to conduct research into manufacturing on 450-mm diameter wafers. That construction was due to complete in April 2010 although subsequent presentations from IMEC have said mid-2010.
But this would allow the IMEC facility to provide house room for EEMI-450 coordinated work to start in the second half of 2010.
