LSI, Seagate team up for solid-state storage

LONDON — LSI Corp. (Milpitas, Calif.) and Seagate Technology Inc. (Scotts Valley, Calif.) are going to work together on PCI-based solid-state storage for data centers.

LSI will produce board-level products that integrate SAS and PCIe communications with Seagate solid-state drive (SSD) technology, the company said. The products are said to address architectural challenges that have limited the adoption of solid-state storage. Product samples are expected to be available to OEM customers in the second quarter of this year.

"These new LSI products will accelerate enterprise application processing and help reduce I/O latency by using standards-based interfaces and protocols to minimize the impact to existing end user enterprise infrastructures," said David Mosley, executive vice president of sales and marketing for Seagate, in a statement issued by LSI.

"Future market requirements related to price per gigabyte, performance, power consumption and reliability align well with the benefits of solid-state storage, and PCIe-based SSS solutions are poised to meet these requirements in data center environments where higher performance is at a premium," said Jeff Janukowicz, a research manager market research firm IDC, in the same statement.
