Ceva, MimoOn to demonstrate LTE platform at MWC

LONDON — LTE software company MimoOn GmbH (Duisberg, Germany) and Ceva Inc. (San Jose, Calif.) have announced that a joint demonstration of an LTE user equipment PHY platform is set to take place at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

The demonstration is set to include an high definition video stream being transported over an LTE channel using a Mimo 2 by 2 antenna system and 64-QAM coding. The system comprises a single XC321 processor from Ceva running MimoOn's MobilePHY software LTE library software released by Ceva.

The MiMobilePHy supports mandatory and optional features in the 3GPP Release 8 standard. The software is modular and written in ANSI-C for low memory usage and power consumption.

The XC is a configurable DSP designed specifically for 4G mobile handsets and wireless infrastructure. Even in its minimum configuration, a single XC core can handle a complete 4G transceiver path in software. This single-core architecture eliminates the need for heterogeneous designs with multiple coprocessors, accelerators, or SIMD engines — and thus reduces time-to-market and software design complexity.

The XC processor architecture supports multiple air interfaces in software, including LTE, WiMax, HSPA+, and 3G. The company claims the XC processor is up to four times more power efficient than general purpose DSPs.

The two companies had announced a partnership to offer software for LTE wireless basebands in May 2009. MimoOn had already struck deals with several processor design companies to port its range of protocol stacks, including Texas Instruments, Wintegra, Cavium and PicoChip.

"With the build out of LTE networks underway with carriers worldwide, the focus is shifting towards the user equipment," said Thomas Kaiser, CEO of MimoOn, in a statement.

"This fully integrated, end-to-end LTE demonstration with MimoOn represents a significant milestone for our CEVA-XC processor," said Gideon Wertheizer, CEO of Ceva, in the same statement.
