Intel (Santa Clara, Calif.) said Maloney, 52, has an excellent prognosis for a full recovery and is expected to resume all business responsibilities following a period of recuperation, likely to be several months.

Dadi Perlmutter, who along with Maloney is also executive vice president and general manager of the Intel Architecture Group, will handle Maloney's duties while Maloney is out, Intel said.

Many believe Maloney, who has been with Intel since 1982, is a leading candidate to serve as Intel's next CEO. announced a management restructuring last September.

"I visited with Sean and his sense of humor and determination to return to work fill the room," said Intel President and CEO Paul Otellini, in a statement.
