Cadence To Buy CadMOS
Cadence Design Systems said Thursday that it will acquire CadMOS Design Technology to expand its design automation software for verification of physical layouts and signal integrity.

Privately held CadMOS Design Technology Inc. was founded in 1997 to provide noise-analysis solutions for a range of deep-submicron chip designs, including microprocessors mixed-signal ICs, ASICs, and DRAMs. The San Jose, Calif., company employs 25 people.

"Adding CadMOS signal integrity analysis engines to established Cadence analog and digital design solutions provides us with the best correct-by-design timing and signal integrity closure capabilities in the industry," said Paul McLellan, corporate vice president of custom IC products at Cadence Design Systems Inc., San Jose. "These benefits will enable us to provide our customers with tools that substantially improve yield, performance, and predictability."

Charlie Huang, chairman and CEO of CadMOS, said the combination of system-on-chip design solutions from Cadence and the company's focus on physical verification and extraction tools will "accelerate the changes in methodology and flows that are becoming necessary for designers to achieve working UDSM ultra-deep sub-micron silicon." CadMOS customers include Lucent Technologies Inc. (stock: LU), Texas Instruments Inc. (stock: TXN), Sony Corp. (stock: SNE), Broadcom Corp. (stock: BRCM), PMC-Sierra Inc. (stock: PMCS), and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (stock: AMD), according to Huang.

Terms of the acquisition were not released, and Cadence (stock: CDN) said it expects the transaction to be completed in the first quarter of 2001.
