LONDON — Startup company Impinj Inc. (Seattle, Washington) has developed a non-volatile memory it calls AEFuse, for Advanced Erasable Fuse, which it has licensed to Analog Devices Inc., Impinj said Monday (Feb. 7).

The AEFuse is the world's first multiple-times-programmable (MTP) fuse manufacturable in standard logic CMOS processes, and it is aimed at embedded low-bit count, limited cycling requirements, Impinj said.

Impinj also has its AEON embedded nonvolatile memory which can be implemented in standard logic CMOS without additional mask steps, which it has licensed to National Semiconductor Corp. and is working with Texas Instruments Inc. on RFID applications,

AEFuse memory provides up to 1000 re-write cycles, providing a more flexible solution for analog and mixed-signal semiconductor companies that require up to a few hundred bits of reprogrammable nonvolatile memory (NVM).

Impinj's AEFuse has been adopted by two of the world's leading mixed-signal chip producers including Analog Devices.

"We have been impressed with Impinj's ability to meet our high expectations for a smooth transfer of technology. Their exemplary technical support ensures our highest likelihood of success," said Paul Daigle, a product line manager at Analog Devices, in a statement issued by Impinj.

Impinj did not disclose the identity of the second licensee.

AEFuse hard IP blocks have been characterized in TSMC's 0.25-micron and 0.18-micron logic CMOS processes with qualification underway and expected to complete in the second quarter of 2005, Impinj said. Users can select from over 100 configurations, including those with on-chip high voltage blocks, oscillator and lock bits. All configurations operate over a temperature range from -40 degrees C to 125 degrees C, with 1000 re-write cycles, and 10-year data retention.
