Wolfson Microelectronics plc is planning to introduce a new family of digital silicon micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) microphones.

Already in demand by many of the world's leading consumer electronics manufacturers, Wolfson's digital MEMS microphones combine low power consumption, excellent audio capture, superior signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio, enhanced sensitivity tolerance and a miniature low profile package, making them ideal for portable applications including mobile phones, portable computers, portable media players, digital still cameras, and portable navigation devices.

The WM7210 and WM7220 digital MEMS microphones will complement Wolfson's high volume family of analogue MEMS microphones which were introduced in 2009. Based on Wolfson's proprietary CMOS/MEMS membrane technology, the new digital devices will deliver high reliability and performance, and can withstand the high temperatures needed for automated flow solder assembly, which can damage conventional microphones.

Wolfson says it plans to launch the digital MEMS microphones in the next few months.
