Osram, Seoul Semi sign cross-licensing deal

MUNICH, Germany — LED manufacturers Seoul Semiconductor and Osram GmbH have signed a cross-licence agreement to share their patents in the segments of white and high-brightness LED technology.

The scope of the agreement refers to white LED technology and packaging, explained an Osram spokesperson. Seoul Semiconductor gets access to Osram's patents on generating white light through the conversion method. In return, Osram can utilize Seoul's packaging patents for LEDs.

Under the agreement, both companies will collaborate and build on each other's strengths as strategic partners, Seoul Semiconductors announced in a press release. In addition, the duo will cooperate in defending the rights based on the respective patents. Seoul sees its position in the market for high-brightness and energy-efficient LED lighting solutions strengthened.

Under the terms of the agreement, the respective subsidiaries of the two companies, Osram Opto Semiconductors and Seoul Optodevice, also have access to the patents.

With a growth rate of 46 percent, the global market for white LEDs is on the verge to a breakthrough in general lighting applications for the home and the automotive industry. This expectation has recently persuaded Osram to exit its OLED display business in order to focus on lighting applications. Osram estimates the market for LED-based lighting to grow from $89 million in 2006 to $597 million in 2011.
