The deal supports Renesas' plans to extend contactless applications to new form factors just as the industry does, and will strengthen the Japanese company's position in the secure MCU markets for high-end mobile and dual-interface banking applications.
The license agreement should strengthen Renesas' global position in the secure MCU markets for high-end mobile and dual-interface banking applications. It will help drive the emergence of advanced over-the-air mobile phone services based on NFC, such as electronic ticketing and payment, and thus allow mobile network operators to increase average revenue per user.
Christophe Duverne, senior vice president and general manager, identification business, NXP Semiconductors, said in a statement: "NXP's agreement with Renesas to license the MIFARE portfolio, including Mifare DESFire and Mifare Plus, is a step towards providing advanced contactless solutions that bring greater convenience and ease of use."
