GPU core provider signs deal with VeriSilicon

LONDON &151; Vivante Corp. (Sunnyvale, Calif.), a supplier of graphics processing unit (GPU) IP cores, has added its 2- and 3-D graphics cores to the system-level IP portfolio available from Verisilicon Holdings Co. Ltd. (Santa Clara, Calif.).

Founded in 2001, VeriSilicon is a design foundry providing custom solutions and system-on-a-chip turnkey services. The agreement gives VeriSilicon access to Vivante’s silicon proven OpenGL ES 2.0/1.1 and OpenVG 1.1 GPUs for customer SoC designs targeting mobile and home entertainment consumer applications. Vivante claimed that its IP cores deliver the highest performance per square millimeter of silicon area.

"By adding Vivante GPU IP, VeriSilicon expands its SoC platform capability to service multimedia applications such as Blu-ray DVD players, advanced set-top boxes, high-definition digital TV devices, and automobile infotainment devices with audio, video and image processing requirements," said Bill Wang, corporate vice president of business development of VeriSilicon, in a statement from Vivante.

"Increasing demand for sophisticated on-screen displays, graphical user interfaces and Internet gaming applications drives ever-more capable GPUs into a wide range of SoCs, where silicon area and performance delivered per milliwatt are the most important factors in selecting a GPU," said David Jarmon, vice president of business development and sales of Vivante, in the same statement.

"Vivante is fueling this growth by providing a wide range of silicon proven GPU cores with the best performance per square millimeter of silicon area for each product category. This dramatic silicon area savings enables SoC vendors to differentiate a wide range of platforms with leading edge graphics performance," he added.
