Synopsys finalizes the CHIPit acquisition

Venice, Florida — Synopsys, Inc. announced it has completed its acquisition of the CHIPit business unit of ProDesign, a provider of high-speed ASIC and System-on-Chip (SoC) verification systems. This move by Synopsys clearly tells us that Synopsys is serious in playing a major role in the FPGA prototyping market. CHIPit is a line of automated ASIC prototyping solutions that provides hardware-assisted verification throughout the SoC and ASIC project life cycles. The terms of the deal are not being disclosed.

Synopsys stated that the integration of CHIPit's strong team, technology and products into Synopsys' Synplicity Business Group will expand Synopsys' presence in the fast-growing rapid prototyping segment and accelerate its ability to address every phase in the verification cycle. But Synplicity, before the acquisition by Synopsys, had already acquired the Confirma technology from Hardi, and, at least on the surface, the Confirma and the CHIPit technology appear very similar. Lauro Rizzati, general manager of EVE-USA sees the acquisition as benefiting his company. He further observes that Synopsys will have to choose between the two technologies, a project quite different from just integrating the CHIPit team into the Synplicity environment.
