Plastic Logic delays e-reader, cancels orders

LONDON — Plastic Logic GmbH (Dresden, Germany) has delayed for a second time the launch of its monochrome Que e-reader and cancelled existing orders.

A company spokesperson declined to say when the Que would come to market, but confirmed that the company had cancelled pre-existing orders. Neither would the spokesperson say whether engineering issues or pricing was the problem.

"The market is changing rapdly and we want to make sure the product is the right product for our business customers," said a spokesperson. "We continue to refine the products. We are anxious to get them to market as soon as possible," she added. The e-reader was originally due to go on sale initially in the United States through a deal with the Barnes & Noble book store with units priced at between $650 and $800 depending on whether it has 3G connectivity and the amount of solid-state memory. After showing the Que at the Consumer Electronics Show in January the commercial launch was scheduled for April but was subsequently delayed until June 24.

However the launch of the iPad by Apple, with a color display and at a lower price point may have undermined Plastic Logic's plans. Plastic Logic makes use of an organic transistor active matrix backplane to drive a monochrome e-Ink electrophoretic display. It was revealed in May that progress to a full-color Plastic Logic display is set to take a couple of years, despite the fact that the company has a color prototype working in its Cambridge R&D center.
