Photonis (Merignac, France) is a privately held company with 40 years experience in sensor technology and the design and manufacture of electronic systems for defense, security, industrial and scientific markets. The company did not disclose how much it has paid for its 51 percent stake.
MicroOLED (Grenoble, France), founded in 2007, develops and manufactures highly integrated micro-displays for use in defense systems for dismounted soldier head-up displays, in OEM instrumentation, in video glasses for 3-D and high-definition applications, and viewfinders for cameras.
"The acquisition of MicroOLED is a natural move in strengthening the Photonis Group's offer for the global night-vision digital market," said Goossen Boers, CEO of Photonis, in a statement. "Our group is committed to provide to the market low power, compact, high resolution digital optoelectronic sensors. MicroOLED enables us to provide optimized solutions with state-of-the-art micro-display technology."
Eric Marcellin-Dibon, CEO of MicroOLED, said: "We anticipate attractive opportunities in the medical sector as well as in mobile products and digital cameras for consumers." He added: "Joining the Photonis Group enables us to strengthen our manufacturing capability and to advance our technological developments to offer innovative products. In addition we will benefit from the existing Photonis sales and marketing channels, to enlarge our market access to a wide range of customers and to develop new opportunities for professional applications."
Photonis specializes in image intensifier tubes, micro-channel plates, nuclear detectors and power tubes with manufacturing at seven site in Europe and the United States. The Photonis Group generated revenues of 166 million euro (about $200 million) in 2009.
