MRAM maker settles with WD

SAN JOSE, Calif. — MagSil Corp., which is developing MRAM technology based on patents from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has not officially launched its technology but has been active on the legal front.
MagSil and MIT have reached an out-of-of-court settlement with Western Digital Corp., and Western Digital and its affiliates have received a license to the patent at issue in the suit.
Litigation is still pending in Federal district court in Delaware against Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, Hitachi Data Systems, Hitachi America and Shenzen ExcelStor Technology. The defendants are alleged to to have infringed a patent owned by MIT and exclusively licensed to MagSil by making and selling hard disk drives or hard disk drive components using tunneling magnetoresistive (TMR) technology.
To date, MagSil has reached out-of-court settlements with Seagate Technologies, SAE Magnetics and Headway Technologies in addition to Western Digital.
“We are very pleased with this additional settlement. We will vigorously continue to exercise our right to defend and be fairly compensated for use of our patented innovations, and we look forward to a favorable resolution of our claims against the remaining defendants,” Jay Kamdar, president and CEO of MagSil, said in a statement.
MagSil, headquartered in Santa Clara, Calif., is one of many players in the MRAM space. MagSil’s so-called Magnetic Recording (iMR) cell architecture is said to combine the best of magnetic technology with mainstream semiconductor manufacturing processes, enabling the development of standalone and embedded MRAM products.
