ISuppli: Android growth to outpace Apple's iOS
8/5/2010 6:55 PM EDT
SAN FRANCISCO—Use of Google Inc.'s Android operating system (OS) is set to surpass that of Apple Inc.'s iOS by 2012, according to a forecast release Thursday (Aug. 5) by market research firm iSuppli Corp.
Android will be used in 75 million smartphones by 2012, up from 5 million in 2009, according to the forecast. Meanwhile, iOS usage will amount to 62 million in 2012, up from 25 million in 2009, according to the forecast.
By 2012, Android will have a 19.4 percent share of the smartphone market, up from 2.7 percent in 2009, said iSuppli. Apple's iOS will be in 15.9 percent of smartphones in 2012, up from 13.8 percent in 2009, the firm said.
Android is an open source OS used by dozens of handsets from multiple vendors, as well devices such as tablet computers and e-readers. Apple's iOS, by contrast, is used only in Apple's iPhones, iPads and the iPod Touch.
"Android is taking the smartphone market by storm," said Tina Teng, senior analyst, wireless communications, for iSuppli, in a statement.
While the iPhone family remains the standard against which all other smartphones are measured, the proprietary nature of the iOS and Apple's closed system business model will limit the number of smart phones with the operating system, Teng said.

Google has done a great job of developing android and showing its presence in smart phone market which is not its niche area. Just wondering why did microsoft overlooked this market ? Being developer of OS it was natural to expect microsoft to lead this market...any idea where did they go wrong ?

According to the recent reports(for last 6 months) from NPD and Nielsen, Android has already overtook iOS in the US. So wouldnt be surprised, if total android devices shipped exceeds iOS devices mid 2011 even. The tablets coming out later this year will give another major boost to the android numbers.

How does Google make money on Android? I just don't see it. They are not taking a cut of applications, like Apple. Everyone says advertising, but that's an application thing. And if they continue with no certification requirements for apps, unlike Apple's "Walled Garden" how are they going to ensure the hooks are in apps to promote advertisement? I don't get it.
If its just ensuring that Goggle remains the seach engine of choice for mobile, then I guess that works but a mobile device screen is very small. How many ads and popups and click through opportuities can a mobile search screen display?

I think Google plans to make most of the money in the future when Andriod becomes the de facto OS for mobile phones. Their approach is similar to Microsoft's on the PC, albeit they are not selling directly to consumers.
They can make a lot of money from Apps because eventually they will be selling to a millions of people.
Mobile phone advertising would also be a good source of revenue.

Microsoft has been very inflexible and lethargic in the mobile phone market. However, they actually tried to make waves ages ago with the Windows CE OS for mobile phones.
However, phones have really evolved much faster than PCs have - and Microsoft was apparently not able to keep up. In fact, it is fair to say that the smartphone business is all about making a small hand-held PC. Microsoft was probably discouraged by the dynamic nature of mobile phone technology and thus, decided not to become heavily invested in such a fickle technology.
As Microsoft have not shown any real desire or innovation in the mobile OS market, Apple and Google have now seized the market. With technologies like LTE promising to deliver download speeds of 100 Mbps to smartphones, Microsoft may have missed a huge opportunity to participate in the smartphone market.
