TI seeks to soar with Eagle core

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Getting a jump on its rivals, Texas Instruments Inc. claims that it will be the first licensee for ARM Holdings plc’s next-generation Cortex-A series processor core, codenamed Eagle.
TI will partner with ARM in the conception and definition of Eagle, which will be formally announced later this year. TI intends to use the new processor to expand future OMAP platform offerings.
TI formally engaged with ARM on this project in June 2009. ARM Holdings recently said it plans to launch three additions to its Cortex family of processor cores during 2010. The cores, codenamed Eagle, Heron and Merlin, all have lead licensing customers and deliveries of intellectual property will start either in 2010 or early in 2011 depending on the core.
Eagle sits within the high-performance Cortex A-class, Heron sits within the embedded and real-time Cortex R-class and Merlin is a novel core for ARM's Cortex-M grouping.

Clearly, after exiting the baseband biz, TI wants to win the Arm-based processor race for smartphones. So does MediaTek, ST, Qualcomm, Nvida, Marvell, Renesas and others. Who will be the winners and losers in this segment?
Or will Intel win with Atom?

ARM-based suppliers need to get a move on. It's nearly 3 years since Cortex-A9 was announced, and still no products on the market. The Atom power disadvantage is shrinking.

I am very interested in knowing which processor will dominate the portable devices which, in my opinion, cover mobile phone to tablet. Maybe, even the high portability laptop will join the group.
