NXT offers USB-powered audio amplifier

LONDON – NXT plc, a provider of sound- and touch-related electronic products, has announced a USB powered stereo amplifier module that delivers up to 15 watts per channel from a standard USB port.
The DyadUSB module incorporates NXT's recently acquired Audium amplifier chip technology and is matched to NXT's balanced mode radiator flat panel speaker technology.
The DyadUSB can be designed into desktop and travel speakers and is suitable for use with notebook and netbook as add-on speaker without requiring an external power source
The audium audio processing chip is up to 20 times more efficient than competing parts and employs power rail switching so that it operates efficiently from a low voltage supply most of the time. A boost regulator delivers a higher operating voltage to the output transistors on audio peaks.
"This launch is the first significant step in transforming NXT's business model to place greater emphasis on supplying components, modules and reference designs, in addition to licensing IP," said James Lewis, NXT's CEO, in a statement.
The DyadUSB is being demonstrated to potential customers with mass production scheduled for early 2011. The amplifier, complete with a pair of 40-mm by 40-mm BMR drive units, will cost approximately $50 in 100 unit quantities.
