Rumor mill: Apple to buy Cirrus

Mark LaPedus

9/2/2010 5:33 PM EDT

SAN JOSE, Calif. - There are rumors that Apple Inc. could buy Cirrus Logic Inc., according to Barrons.com, which cites TheFlyOnTheWall.com as its source.

with the iPhone and iPad, Apple has become more systems house than traditional OEM. Apple now designs its own complex ASICs.

It even acquired IC design houses P.A. Semi and Intrinsity to bolster its ASIC design expertise.

Since when can a respectable publication like Barrons cite a "Source" that is a gossip website and not an actual person from within the company? This "news" is not news at all but likely someone trying to influence the stock price of a company by spreading rumors and Barrons seems to have taken the bait and helped.

Sometimes I wonder if the rumor causes the event. This is a good time to acquire expertise outside of your core competencies. Anyone from Cirrus that wants to comment?

The only association of the two, I can think of is that Cirrus Logic had an audio codec inside Ipad. Also, it had a one and a half USD audio codec inside the Iphone4 BOM of around 190 USD. I dont see any overlap of interested here, clearly.

According to a Rueters article a third of Cirrus Logic Revenues is derived from Apple alone. So it might make economic sense for Apple in the long term to bring in Cirrus and integrate their AMS circuits with their A4 chip

But then Apple would be faced with running another business, somewhat different than their existing businesses. While it may seem somewhat appealing on the surface, it is not quite that simple. But then rumors are, as always, plenty of fun to conjecture about. It looks like Mark made a very insightful statement about the whole thing.

It will be a win win situation for Apple.

Although I love a rumor just like everyone else, buying a company with an almost 1.2B market cap to save less than a $1.50 per iPod seems a bit steep. May have made more sense back if Cirrus was still around $2.50 a share.

I think it would make more sense for Apple to invest in Cirrus by buing a proportion of its shares. That way it can enjoy potential growth in Cirrus, while Cirrus continues to focus on running its own business and supporting a different set of customers to what Apple is used to.

I believe Apple will buy or invest in more chip makers. First it was PA Semi. Then Intrinsity. Is Cirrus next? Who should Apple buy next?

Interesting !!! Apple is buying everything that can contribute to any of Apple’s IC needs :) Will Cirrus be next? I doubt...I would have bet on ARM as Apple’s next acquisition
