Update: Gartner sees bright spots for ICs

SAN JOSE, Calif.—Market research firm Gartner Inc. has not raised its IC forecast in 2011, which calls for modest single-digit growth. But the firm still sees some bright spots in the marketplace next year.

In September, Gartner (Stamford, Conn.) was predicting 4.6 percent growth in 2011. The research firm did not change its IC forecast for 2010, which calls 31.5 percent growth.

The firm lowered its forecast for PCs to 17 percent growth in 2010, down from 19 percent.  This year is a hot one for cell phones, tablet PCs and other products, according to the firm.

Despite a relatively flat projection for IC growth in 2011, there are some bright spots. PCs and cell phones will remain the big drivers for ICs in 2011, said Bryan Lewis, an analyst with Gartner, during a presentation here.

PC growth is expected to range from 16-to-17 percent in 2011 over 2010. "Mobile PCs are strong," Lewis said. "The smartphone is also a driver."

Tablet PCs are hot. With the Apple iPad as the poster boy driving demand, worldwide sales of tablet computers will exceed 200 million units in 2014, exceptional growth from its projected 19.5 million unit sales in 2010, according to the market research company.
