Foundries, memory firms shine in IC ranking

SAN FRANCISCO—All of the top 20 semiconductor suppliers have for one—Sony Corp.—are expected to register strong double digit growth rates in 2010, according to IC Insights Inc.'s preliminary ranking of the top 20 chip suppliers this year.
Only $50 million is projected to separate the No. 4 and No. 5 suppliers this year—Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (TSMC) and Texas Instruments Inc., according to the ranking, which is part of IC Insights' forthcoming November update to the firm's McClean Report. The close race means that the fourth position is still up for grabs, IC Insights said.
Of the big five memory suppliers in the top 20 ranking—Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., Toshiba Corp., Hynix Semiconductor Inc., Micron Technology Inc. and Elpida Memory Inc.—all but Samsung are expected to move up at least one position in the top 20 ranking, IC Insights (Scottsdale, Ariz.) said.
Samsung, the No. 2 ranked chip supplier overall for the past several years, is expected to gain ground on No. 1 ranked Intel Corp., IC Insights said. Intel's 2009 sales were 52 percent higher than Samsung's, but that margin is expected to fall to 23 percent this year, according to IC Insights.
Foundries are also expected to fare well in the final top 20 rankings. IC Insights' preliminary ranking shows TSMC moving up two spots to No. 4 overall, while rival United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) is expected to jump to nineteenth overall from 25 in 2009.
Renesas Electronics Corp.—formed from the merger of NEC Electronics Corp. and Renesas Technology Inc. in April—is expected to rank sixth this year overall, IC Insights said. The combined sales of NEC and Renesas would have ranked No. 4 in 2009, IC Insights said. (Though the merger was finalized in April, IC Insights said it combined the two companies' semiconductor sales for all of 2009 and 2010 for the sake of comparison).

When you wrote "suppliers have for one", didn't you mean "suppliers save for one?"

I have never quite understood this ranking...
Is a chip sold by Qualcomm counted twice?...once for Qualcomm and once for their foundry.
