Mellanox buys Voltaire

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Mellanox Technologies Ltd. will acquire Voltaire Ltd. for approximately $218 million.

Mellanox believes that the Voltaire acquisition will strengthen its position in providing end-to-end connectivity systems. The deal will expand its software and product offerings in the growing worldwide data center server and storage markets it serves.

Voltaire is a provider of scale-out computing fabrics for data centers, high performance computing and cloud environments. Voltaire’s family of server and storage fabric switches and advanced management software improve performance of mission-critical applications, increase efficiency and reduce costs through infrastructure consolidation and lower power consumption.

In a major move, Oracle Inc. recently made a strategic investment in Mellanox Technologies, a supplier of InfiniBand-based chip technology. Database giant Oracle has acquired 10.2 percent of Mellanox's ordinary shares in the open market. Oracle claims it has no plan or intention to make an unsolicited and unfriendly offer to take over Mellanox.

at least to Qlogic, this is interesting. can't make any real difference to the rest of IB's so-called ecosystem, since Mellanox produced the heart of Voltaire's products anyway.

is Qlogic's Infinipath NIC the only non-Mellanox chip keeping IB from being entirely single-source?

@markhahn: it seems that way... QLogic will remain the only non-Mellanox Silicon with its TrueScale ASIC. One difference is QLogic also has silicon for converged ethernet and fiber channel ideal for FCoE, whereas, Mellanox makes PHyX, a much broader multi-protocol 10GigE PHY to literally connects all forms of physical layers XAUI , XFI, SFI or 10GBASE-KR, 10GbaseT, etc.

Interesting consolidation in the IB marketplace with Mellanox acquiring Voltaire. Frankly, Mellanox may do better in the multi protocol products than the core InfiniBand products now that 10G products are becoming mainstream and 40G/100G products are off the drawing board.
