Imagination ports Android to Meta processor

LONDON – Multimedia processor IP licensor Imagination Technologies plc has announced Android support for its Meta multi-threaded, multicore processor family, including Meta-connected application platform solutions.

The complete Google Android OS has been ported to run on the Meta Linux kernel and offers symmetric multi-processor and "hot-plug" features. Android for Meta runs standard binary Android apps and features an optimized port of the Dalvik virtual machine.

Meta provides a scalable Android approach from the Internet of things to Internet everywhere, Imagination said. Imagination said it has been demonstrating an entry-level Meta-connected application platform suitable for enhanced embedded devices such as connected radios, smart photo-frames, information terminals, thin-client devices, internet edge appliances, tablet computers and set-top-boxes.

Android OS had 25.5 percent worldwide smartphone market share in the third quarter of 2010, according to market research company Gartner. However, Android is intended to be deployed in a broad range of consumer electronics equipment including tablets, STBs, photo frames, cameras and printers.

Imagination said it plans to add features to Android for Meta including integration of the PowerVR SGX graphics, VXD video decode, AXD audio and Engsigma communications and connectivity cores.

"The rich application environment offered by Android ensures that our Meta partners can take full advantage of the growing Android-based community of developers, middleware and content," said Tony King-Smith, vice president of marketing for Imagination, in a statement. "Only Meta-based SoC platforms can combine Android over one or more hardware threads with demanding real-time and native DSP algorithms all on the same SoC processor platform," he added.

Very intersting and very exciting... just the kind of thing one would hope to see in an open and thriving OS.

This is a great news. Android ported on Linux kernel thats really interesting. Android is the most saleable OS today and linux being open source, it would be a great marriage. I guess its most favorable business situation.

Is this Meta Processor a competitor for ARM CPUs in the mobile space? I guess, since ARM ditched PowerVR & started making its own Mali graphics cores, this was the only option for ImgTec. But
I am skeptical about the success , to say the least.
