SAN JOSE, Calif. – The cellphone is well along in its transition to a mobile Web device led by Apple iOS with Android rapidly catching up, according to recent surveys from the Nielsen Co. 3-D TV, by contrast, is still a blip on the radar screen.
Of 228 million mobile phones in use in the U.S. 31 percent are smartphones and slightly more--83.2 million--are used to access the Web, Nielsen said in its annual State of the Media report.
Apple's iOS leads with 28.6 percent of the smartphone market over Research in Motion (26.1) and Android (25.8) in a neck-and-neck race. But Android is poised to catch up fast given 40 percent of smartphpone purchases in the last six months were for handsets using the Google OS, Nielsen said.
Apple's iPhone 3GS is currently the most popular smartphone with its iPhone 4 and iPhone 3G taking fifth and sixth place. Samsung came in second with its SCH-U450, followed by the Motorola Droid and RIM Blackberry 8500 Curve.
Not surprisingly YouTube is the most popular mobile video channel, followed by Fox, Comedy Central, ESPN and MTV. At people aged 13-17 send the most text messages per month (3,705 texts) compared to 18-24 year olds (1,707) and 24-34 year olds (758).
By contrast, 3-D TV is still a niche phenomenon. Only two percent of households have a 3-D TV, and the biggest group of survey respondents (59 percent) said they have no plans to buy a 3-D TV in the next 12 months. Only three percent said they definitely will buy a 3-D TV this year.
Overall 115.9M U.S. homes have TVs, 65 million of them capable of displaying a high definition picture. The average U.S. home has 2.5 TVs.
As for video playback devices, 100.2 million homes have a DVD player, 70.6 million still use a VCR and 43.1 million have a digital video recorder.

The growth will be more rapid if total cost of ownership for this smart phone is low. If smart phone is available at $250 and monthly charge is around $35, I see more consumer to switch over to it.

3,705 texts per month! That is a lot of typing. What do they have to say?

For me, 3DTV is not appealing, even though I can appreciate the technical wizardry involved. Part of the problem for me is having to wear the glasses, and part of it knowing what I am seeing is not "real", i.e. not what I would see in real life. And, with the possible exception of some well done animation, 3DTV can be distracting to the story or subject matter.
It won't be the first tech craze bandwagon that I did not get on. So far, I refuse to be addicted to some gadget as I see many smart phone users are. But I don't begrudge others the right to waste or use their time as they see fit. And I do enjoy being part of the industry which create such technology such as to be indistinguishable from magic.
pixies comment about text messaging mirrors my own.
