SAN FRANCISCO—Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (TSMC) has agreed to purchase a fab and additional land from memory chip maker Powerchip Technology Corp. for NT$2.9 billion (about $100 million), the company said Wednesday (Jan. 12).

According to a regulatory filing made Wednesday, the deal includes a fab under construction at the Hsinchu Science Park in Northern Taiwan, where TSMC is headquartered and maintains several existing fabs.

Last month, the Bloomberg news service reported that TSMC was in discussions to buy land and buildings from Powerchip to expand its operations. A Digitimes report last month, citing a report by the the Chinese-language Commercial Times, indicated that TSMC was negotiating to buy Powerchip's P4 plant, still under construction, and a land lot designated for the construction of Powerchip's P5 plant.

Wednesday's regulatory filing did not provide specific details about the assets acquired by TSMC. A spokesperson for TSMC did not immediately respond to request for comment.
