LONDON – Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. has announced it has a 12-megapixel CMOS imager made using a 1.12-micron pixel and back-dside illumination. The image sensor is intended for use in mobile phones, Samsung said.
The S5K3L1 supports 12Mp full resolution images at 30 frames per second (fps) and 1080p full HD video at 60fps. The new image sensor also includes an on-chip pixel correction feature, compensating color and luminance response variations to address image distortion.
Samsung's S5K3L1 imager is designed to sit in an 8.5-mm by 8.5-mm autofocus camera module with a height of 6.0-mm. Samples of the 12-Mpixel imager are available now with mass production scheduled in the third quarter of this year.
The S5K3H2 is a similar CMOS image sensor with 8-Mpixel resolution based on a 1.4-micron pixel. The S5K3H2 is also sampling and it is scheduled for mass production in the second quarter of this year, Samsung said.

i am sceptical about that, still highest sensor implement on a smartphone is around 8mp.i dont tnink before '12 we will see such devices. In order to be smartphone compatible a sensor should have quite small size that causes issue
