Samsung Orion to ship as Exynos next month

SAN FRANCISO—Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. said Thursday (Feb. 10) that its dual-core applications processor codenamed Orion will be the first to carry the Exynos brand name for the company's family of applications processors.
Orion, henceforth to be known as Exynos 4210, is a 1GHz dual-core Cortex A9-based applications processor scheduled for production next month. It was first announced as Orion last September.
Samsung (Seoul, South Korea) announced that the Exynos brand name will be applied to the company's application processors, which are designed to power mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.
According to Samsung, the name Exynos ties into the company's "smart and green" strategy adopted by its semiconductor devices and solutions developed specifically to support the stringent performance and power requirements of mobile devices. Exynos originates from the Greek words smart (exypnos) and green (prasinos), Samsung said.
"Application processors for the mobile market are one of the flagship products in our semiconductor business," said Seh-Woong Jeong, executive vice president of marketing for Samsung's System LSI Division.

Interesting name - sounds like the Greek gods. The competition is everywhere on this processor business.

Samsung probably is not worried about competition in CPU biz. They alone can sell maybe 50+ million smartphones & tablets this year.

COnsidering the huge number of smart phones and tablets that samsung makes it is definitely wise to have their own processors. At the same time if they can compete with the likes of Quallcom and TI and get a place in the mobile phones of other vendors then its definitely ahuge success.
