Intel buys Dutch multimedia DSP firm

LONDON – Intel Corp. has acquired Silicon Hive BV, a licensor of customized parallel processing DSP accelerators for various multimedia applications.
Intel Capital was an investor in Silicon Hive (Eindhoven, The Netherlands), a spin off from the Philips Research Laboratories, and Intel has made a deal to license embedded parallel processor architectures, compilers, and programming tools for mobile phone applications in 2008.
The amount that Intel has agreed to pay has not yet been disclosed. Nor is it is clear whether Silicon Hive will be run as a separate division or will continue to support the extensive list of semiconductor chip makers to which it has licensed its technology.
In a statement Intel said that the acquisition would bring better still-imaging and multimedia video processor technology, compilers and software tools to the Atom processor portfolio. "The Silicon Hive capabilities will aid in the delivery of more differentiated Atom-processor based SoCs as multimedia and imaging grow in importance across the mobile smart device segments," Intel said.
A spokesperson for Silicon Hive said they could not provide more detail than Intel had provided in a press release.

Looks like intel is conscious that standing still is a sin in this industry. Now trying to gain strength in multimedia for his Atom chip which is aimed at mobile products like cell phones, netbooks and tablets.
This certainly will yield good fruits to Intel.

The multimedia is a very important for a ny CPU in the smart phone or tablet. So probably with this acquisition Intel will have more tools in their nest to actually compete with the Likes of Nvidia who are actually coming out with great guns with their Tegra processors.
