GRENOBLE, France – The Industry Strategy Symposium Europe, which took place here this week is hoping to convene in 2012 in Abu Dhabi.

Advanced Technology Investment Co. (ATIC), parent of Globalfoundries Inc., is wholly-owned by the Gulf state. A move by SEMI Europe to hold a key annual meeting in the Arab world also signal the seriousness of Abu Dhabi's intentions to eventually become a silicon manufacturer.

At the closing of this year's meeting Cor Claeys of IMEC and chairman of the ISS Europe 2011 organizing committee, said he was unable to do the conventional thing and point to the dates and location for next year's event because the details are still being worked out. He added that because next year would be the 25th such event they were looking to do something special and that Abu Dhabi was the intended destination.
