MANHASSET, NY -- Dimitry Grabbe, 83, retired Director of Research and Technology for AMP, Inc. died Wednesday, March 2, 2011.

Grabbe, who lately taught at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, made seminal contributions to advancing U.S. space exploration.

He was instrumental in garnering some 500 U.S., and foreign patents covering machine design, semiconductor packaging, electronics assembly and optoelectronic connector design.

His main contribution in printed circuit board technology led to the development of large, multi-layer printed circuit boards, which was crucial for U.S. space-exploration activities.

In 1964, he founded Maine Research Corp. which specialized in high-end printed circuit boards; the company was dissolved in 1972. He joined AMP, Inc. in 1973. He has been recognized by AMP (now Tyco Electronics) with a Lifetime Achievement Award, and by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, which chose him for its Leonardo da Vinci Award. An IEEE Life Fellow, Grabbe was also a fellow of the International Microelectronics And Packaging Society (IMAPS).

In 2007 Grabbe was the fifth recipient of the IEEE Components, Packaging, and Manufacturing Technology award, an award established by the IEEE Board of Directors only in 2002. His citation reads: "For contributions to the fields of electrical/electronic connector technology, and development of multi-layer printed wiring boards."

Grabbe is survived by his wife of 60 years, Xenia, three sons and four daughters.

A true leader in our industry and quite a character as well. Most of my interaction with Dimtry was during his time at AMP although he was well known already due to his accomplishments at Maine Research Corp. He was a wealth of knowledge and always willing to help young engineers.

I knew of Dimitry and was privledged to work with him briefly at AMP. His contributions to electronic interconnect technology cannot be overestimated. He had realistic vision founded in a deep understand of interconnect technologies that enabled him to make these major contributions from which we continue benefitting.

To me this news is especially disturbing as I had a personal, spiritual and professional relationship with Dimitry.

He and many others like him emigrated from Russia to Europe and then the United States in order to escape the genocide of Bolshevik communist against ethnic Russians; His deep allegiance to the Russian Orthodox faith which continues to thrive in the United States.
His contribution to science was enormous albeit his commitment to humanity was equality great.

What a great list of achievements! He will be missed by many I am sure. It is interesting to me that he had been teaching at WPI, what that says to me is he wanted to give back to the next generation of engineers.
