LONDON – Five wafer fabs and two assembly and packaging plants out of 22 factories belonging to Renesas Electronics Corp. have been shut down as part of the impact of the earthquake that hit northern Japan on March 11.

This is even though Renesas appears to have had a relatively small presence in the prefectures of Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima, which were those hit hard by the earthquake and resulting tsunami waves.

Renesas Electronics has provided an advisory about the shutdowns and its response to the rolling blackout measures announced by Tokyo Electric Power Company on Monday (March 14).

The shutdown fabs are: Renesas Northern Japan Semiconductor, Inc., Tsugaru in Aomori prefecture, Tsuruoka factory in Yamagata, Naka Factory in Ibaragi, Takasaki factory in Gunma, Kofu factory in Yamanashi. The backend of line facilities are in Aomori and Yonezawa factory in Yamagata.

Some office and R&D sites were closed during Monday due black outs. These included Renesas Electronics, Tamagawa Office (R&D site) and Renesas Micro Systems Co., Ltd., both in Kanagawa, which are due to open on Tuesday (March 15).

Renesas offices and R&D sites in Musashi, Tokyo and Sagamihara, Kanagawa are due to remain closed on Tuesday (March 15)..

The announcement could be found here when this item was posted. Renesas said it would update the impact of the earthquake to its financial forecasts when confirmed information is available.
