LONDON – MediaTek Inc. spent $20 million to buy a 20 percent stake in capacitive touch-control chip company Shenzhenshihui Top Technology Co. Ltd. which trades as Goodix, according to a Taiwan Economic News report.

The move is part of attempts by MediaTek (Hsinchu, Taiwan) to move up into the smartphone market, the report said.

Goodix claims to be able to supply capacitive touch-control chips for smartphones, mobile digital devices, laptop computers and home appliances and cumulative sales of 40 million chips.
