SiliconBlue tips FPGA move to 40-nm

LONDON – Low power FPGA vendor SiliconBlue Technologies Corp. has disclosed some information about its mobileFPGA devices being made for it using a 40-nm low power CMOS process technology by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd.

The series includes 15 devices all with footprints of less than 50 square millimeters and two main themes; diverse I/O and image processing, SiliconBlue said in a statement.

The Los Angeles family of devices incorporates support for SLIMbus and HSIC and ULPI interface standards. The latter two are based on USB 2.0. This improves the FPGAs support of sensor management and port expansion.

The San Francisco family incorporates support for moving 1080p high definition video with HDMI and MIPI interfaces. It has been designed for video, multi-display, and high-bandwidth memory interface applications, targeting the convergence of video and image content being simultaneously viewed on home and handheld devices.

"We have created two new distinct families that target the two areas where smartphones and other handhelds differentiate," said Kapil Shankar, CEO of SiliconBlue (Santa Clara, Calif.), in a statement. "These devices will be available for designs this year, in time to support the explosion in new handheld products."

SiliconBlue said more information about 40-nm devices would be disclosed in 2Q11. It is not clear when SiliconBlue will be able to supply the FPGAs in volume.
