Dialog offers PMOLED display driver IC

LONDON – Power management IC firm Dialog Semiconductor plc has announced that it has developed a passive-matrix organic light emitting diode (PMOLED) driver IC, the DA8620, which is being used by Lenovo in its S800 mobile phone.

PMOLED displays provide advantages over liquid crystal displays (LCDs) in terms of color quality, viewing angle and video performance. PMOLED displays can also be offered with a greater than 50 percent transmittance, allowing the creation of transparent displays, such as might be used in a head-up display.

Dialog (Kircheim, Germany) has named the procedures embodied in the driver SmartXtend. SmartXtend currently supports resolutions up to 320 by 240 pixels (QVGA). It includes a multi-line addressing scheme, pre-charge schemes and dynamic current matching to reduce peak current and the average power consumption of the display. This also extends the lifetime of the OLED display.

The DA8620 is available for general sale and is shipped in bare die form with gold bumps suitable for mounting as chip-on-flex or chip-on-glass. Dialog did not provide a price.
