WR secures Linux, updates simulator

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Wind River will announced at the Embedded Systems Conference it has won advanced security certification for its Linux Secure. The company also upgraded its Simics simulator to handle designs that span multiple boards.

Wind River Linux Secure based on the Linux 2.6.27 kernel and GCC 4.3.2 compiler achieved Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance Level 4+ (EAL4+) certification. The operating system also supports the FIPS 140-2 security standard. The certification covers use on a variety of processors including ARM-based chips from Texas Instruments as well as Intel and Power CPUs.

"Now organizations can meet their security needs with an open architecture software platform designed to comply with national security criteria, based upon a mature and widely-used Linux distribution," said Paul Anderson, vice president of marketing and strategy for Linux products at Wind River, speaking in a press statement.

Wind River joins embedded software providers such as QNX Software Systems that announced in March it won EAL4+ certification for its QNX Neutrino Realtime Operating System.

Separately, Wind River rolled out version 4.6 of its Simics system simulator. The new version lets users debug software applications that run over multiple boards, using different processors and operating systems including in-house OSes.

Simics 4.6, available in June, integrates Eclipse source code debugging and supports ARM, Intel, MIPS and Power processors. It supports custom graphical output to visually represent a system’s interface and runtime status.
